Emily Cournane

I’ve always been fascinated by the incredible human body, and was drawn to the world of bodywork after suffering with unresolved injuries, and chronic pain. Frustrated at not being able to enjoy our adventure playground I tried various treatment modalities in my search for a solution. Eventually I discovered clinical massage treatment, which provided the results I’d been looking for. This led me to study at Otago Polytechnic, gaining an Advanced Diploma in Therapeutic Massage (Dist). I have since completed post grad study in pain management, structural integration, sports specific therapy, dry needling/acupuncture, visceral manipulation, craniosacral therapy Reiki level 1 and 2, mobilisations, kinesio taping and myofascial release.

My passion is getting people back into doing what they love, fast! I’ve been practicing in Queenstown for the past 9 years and enjoy helping everybody from small children, elderly, expectant mothers, to professional athletes, and everyone in between. I have worked with many local and international sports teams and athletes, including the all blacks, wallabies, kiwis league, NZ open golfers, international ski teams, commonwealth games athletes and adaptive athletes.

My strong interest in biomechanics and the mind/body connection ensures each session is tailored and holistic, focusing on whole body alignment and integration of all the systems, as well as resolving tension, increasing awareness and in the prevention of future injury.

Known for resolving chronic pain and musculoskeletal imbalances, I specialise in therapeutic deep tissue treatment, neuromuscular techniques and dry needling. I believe people can heal their bodies through focused treatment, healthy movement and specific training, as well as great nutrition and a positive mindset.

When I’m not at work you can find me out enjoying all that the wakatipu basin has to offer, mainly hang/paragliding, skiing, snowboarding, speedflying, running and mountain biking. And more recently spending time with my beautiful baby girl ☺ A former ski patroller, adventure guide and river boarding guide, l hold a first descent title for the Sun Kosi river in Nepal.

The human body and its movement has always fascinated me. Over the years, I have tried several sports and exercises myself and treated people with various physical ailments. My own experiences have taught me that our ability to learn and improve ourselves is endless.

I graduated from Tampere University of Applied Sciences (Finland) in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy. Working self employed for 7 years I discovered that my passion lies in manual therapy and massage. In 2018 I followed my dream to travel to New Zealand and started working as a massage therapist. Over 10 years of working as a physiotherapist and massage therapist I have had a wide spectrum of experience from passive postural problems to rehabilitating sports injuries.

Being a Physiotherapist is a great base for body work. I have also completed various courses to help me learn and understand more about both physical health and holistic wellbeing. I graduated in Finnish Body alignment (Kalevalainen jasenkorjaus) in 2016, which was a turning point for me and inspired me to start treating patients with a more holistic approach. Since coming to New Zealand, I have become a registered massage therapist with MNZ and Reiki practitioner (Level 1,2 & 3). I have also started to scratch the surface of craniosacral therapy and Honohono healing. In September 2022 I will start my journey with visceral manipulation. I’m passionate about my work and getting the best results possible requires commitment from me and the client. Modern day life is hectic, demanding and stressful in many ways, to pause and take time to improve your overall wellbeing is my goal. Every session will be tailored specifically for your needs and what you are comfortable with.

When work is done and I’m on Kaisa time you will most likely find me on a yoga mat or in the sauna, usually accompanied by my two awesome cats. Dipping into the lake 365 days a year is part of my daily routine that keeps me going. I also enjoy wandering outdoors, running, gardening, and hanging out with friends- all things that help to keep me sane and happy!
